The Mazarrón Day Centre conducts a therapy dogs to assist people with intellectual disabilities (21/10/2011)

Since early this month of October, has launched a new project in the Day Centre for People with Intellectual Disabilities Mazarrón: Assisted Therapy Dogs.

The project, pioneer in the Region of Murcia, is the involvement of dogs in therapeutic intervention sessions acting as a relational, motivational, instrumental and evocative.

Susi Lola and two dogs are properly trained for this purpose and have a therapy dog ​​certification by the association "An Andalusian Dog," a national benchmark in Animal Assisted Therapy.

The dogs are presented as a multi-sensory stimulation powerfully able to call the attention of users to make them more collaborative therapies and mainstream attitudes in the classroom to their daily lives.

These sessions are led by Marina Ferre, an expert in animal-assisted therapy and occupational therapist, Day Center for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities Mazarrón, in collaboration with the psychologist and the physiotherapist of the Center, becoming an interdisciplinary activity.

The main objective pursued by the Dog Assisted Therapy is to promote the integration of people with disabilities and improve their quality of life through interaction with dogs.

Councillor for Social Policy, Equality and Health, Maria Martinez, stressed that "this therapy is of great benefit to users of the center as they rise to new stimulations. Is to emphasize the important work of technical personnel who are developing this program altruistically, thinking only of the benefits produced by this therapy to people to whom it is directed. "
