Looking for the best alternative for the Phoenician ship (28/10/2010)

The municipality of Mazarrón advances in the "Study of alternatives for the enhancement and tourist use of Mazarrón II Phoenician ship and development and presentation of the chosen alternative."

Recently, the Tourist Consortium Technical Committee has addressed this matter in a meeting chaired by the Mayor of Mazarrón, Francisco Blaya, among which was the Councillor for Culture, Alicia Jiménez, and the renowned archaeologist Manuel Martín Bueno.

The Technical Committee Mazarron Tourist Consortium has met to evaluate alternatives for the enhancement of the Phoenician ship Mazarrón II.

The four alternatives are: conservation and museological in situ conservation and museological out to sea, wet, dry museological conservation and conservation in situ and abroad.

The main objective is to determine a start value and tourist use of the wreck that is compatible with the preservation "in situ" the same as directed by the UNESCO Declaration on Underwater Heritage.

The basic premise is the preservation of the ship, so the different possibilities arise in the face of its value from the standpoint of cultural, historical and tourist wreck considering its viability archaeological level, technical, economic and environmental .

The purpose of the study is to answer the demands that society has to meet part of their heritage which is under water.

In the case of Mazarrón 2, this demand is much greater importance, first as a unique case in Murcia and the Spanish coast, but also because we face the oldest shipwreck in the Mediterranean and one of the few studies of Phoenician period , which gives a leading international significance.

Once the Technical Committee choose a proposal, the process reaches its final stage with the delivery of the study and development of the proposal selected.

Throughout the month of November the Technical Committee will reconvene to consider the alternatives and select the most suitable proposal for the conservation of the boat.

A recent Technical Committee also attended the Civil Engineer and municipal archaeologist and representatives of the State Coastal Authority, Directorate General of Ports and Coasts of the Community, Directorate General of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage of the Directorate General of Tourism, Tourist Consortium Manager Mazarrón and PROINTEC company representatives.
