Mazarrón looking for new alternatives to agriculture (13/08/2010)

The Department of Agriculture of the City of Mazarrón is generating new employment alternatives for the public sector through the experimental cultivation of cherry.

Currently this testing process is being carried out in different agricultural facilities of the municipality with the aim of testing the feasibility and potential commercialization at local, regional and national levels.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Water in 2006 began a program of genetic improvement of cherry, which has borne its first fruit this year.

The first trees began to produce in some parts of the Region, and is expected to create varieties with low chilling requirements and market quality to extend the crop to areas with early fruit production.

IMIDA director, Adrian Martinez, recently declared that "the production data, along with the sugar content, acidity sizes and will allow an appropriate choice for new varietal cherry growers over the next few years."

The manager also noted that regional "private initiative has been successful in Jumilla.

Thus, the farm Toli cherry got good grades in late, and although the collection of the variety 'Brooks' and others of the same maturity date were affected by a week of rain that caused significant losses for fruit cracking, owners this property consider that the year has resulted in a positive way because the price of cherries has remained fairly stable throughout the campaign.

Mazarrón trial

Adrian Martinez finally said that "it was decided to bring online cherry experimental R & D project to several parcels of Mazarrón, to be established soon, to respond to a request from farmers to the Ministry."

However, he warns that "there are doubts about the viability of this crop in that area with the currently available plant material, since in Mazarrón accumulate a few hours at temperatures below 7 degrees Celsius. Despite that, they have chosen 10 varieties as potential candidates for such plots. "
