Grupo Durán shows the technology and techniques that have made it the first producer of papaya in Europe (01/12/2017)

He also explained to the high representatives of governments and companies of various South American countries the advances in the development of crops that allow him to offer his products out of season

Grupo Durán showed the technology and techniques that have made it a pioneer in the production of tropical fruits under greenhouse, in addition to the first producer of papaya in Europe.

The representatives of the commercial mission that visited the Region, on the occasion of the Future forum in Spanish, toured the facilities in Mazarrón of Grupo Durán, where they could see first-hand their progress in their crop developments that allow them to offer their products outside of season to all Europe.

In the business mission to Murcia attended representatives of the public sector, among which were several ministers and senior officials of Ibero-American countries, as well as representatives of private companies.

Jose Miguel Duran, CEO of the company, explained how, after years of research and development, they recently began marketing to the national and European market the first harvest of mangoes produced in the region under greenhouse.

"This is the result of a pioneering project of acclimatization of subtropical fruits, which has led us to become the first producer of papaya in Europe," he said.

Among the keys to the success of Grupo Durán, its CEO highlighted "the implementation of technology and the long experience in greenhouse crops."

This challenge has led them to apply new R & D & I techniques, in which they have invested more than 7 million euros in the last 5 years, among which the improvement of the sexing of the plants, the search for greater their productivity, their natural pollination, the improvement of localized irrigation systems, the development of new collection systems, high altitude greenhouses, as well as climate control, production and quality.

FIRST SUBTROPICAL FRUIT PRODUCER IN THE GREENHOUSE

Grupo Durán has become the largest producer of papaya in Europe.

In just two years, it has managed to produce 700,000 kilos and its goal for 2020 is to reach 1.5 million kilos, which is equivalent to all Spanish demand.

It is the first time that this type of subtropical fruit has been produced in the greenhouse in Spain, with the purpose of large scale commercialization.

In these 5 years, they have managed to produce a papaya of high quality and at a competitive cost in relation to the product imported by boat or plane from countries like Brazil.

The quality is much higher, since it is harvested at its optimum moment of maturation, since when transported by boat from Brazil, it is picked before ripening so that it does so during the journey, which reduces the quality of the fruit.

And the other competitive advantage is the delivery time, since only in one day they are able to take it to supermarkets in countries like Germany, where papaya is highly valued.

These new cultivation techniques to offer a product out of season, are also doing it with new varieties of extra-early stone fruits, such as apricots, peaches, nectarines and paraguayan.

GRUPO DURÁN

Durán Group is a company located in Mazarrón dedicated to the production and marketing of citrus fruit, extra-early stone fruit and tropical fruits such as mango and papaya, becoming one of the pioneering companies in the sector in Spain in this last category of products.

The company exports about 70 percent of the production, mainly to countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium or Poland.
