Mazarrón will reduce its electric bill by 67 percent thanks to measures of energy efficiency in lighting and public buildings (20/04/2017)

The proposed actions will allow a saving of 817,546 euros per year and a reduction of emissions of 2,352 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to more than 1,300 cars circulating for one year

The Community, through the Institute of Development, has carried out energy audits to analyze the behavior and energy consumption of public lighting and five municipal buildings of the City of Mazarrón.

The proposed measures, which are part of the European project ELENA-Fuensanta (European Local Energy Assistance), would mean an economic saving of 817,546 euros in the electricity bill of the municipality, in addition to reducing CO2 emissions by 2,352 tonnes, which is equivalent to 1,307 cars circulating for one year.

The Director of Info, Javier Celdrán, stressed that the involvement of the Mazarron consistory in the fight against climate change "will mean important benefits for the residents of the municipality, both in terms of economic savings and improving environmental quality."

With its participation in this project, he added, "Mazarrón City Council acquires a firm commitment to the environment and, in addition, its good work will have an impact on the electricity bill of the municipality of more than 800,000 euros per year, a saving that Will allow you to allocate these resources to other initiatives that result in the well-being of its citizens. "

This project has also become a key tool for local administrations and is helping to advance the objectives set out in the Covenant of Mayors and the Europe 20-20-20 strategy, placing the Region in a prominent place in The fight against climate change, "Celdrán said.

In the case of the Mazarrón City Council, the most outstanding measures proposed in these audits, both from the point of view of saving and investment, are the replacement of the luminaries of the municipality by LED technology, improvement of gates and supports, as well as The optimization of the electric bill.

This renovation requires an investment of 6,691,435 euros and would generate an annual saving of 730,843 euros, which represents 67% of the electricity bill of the city, achieving a reduction of emissions of 2,190 tons of CO2.

In the case of public buildings, the audit proposes to carry out a series of actions in the town hall, the new town hall, the market square, the house of culture and the residence complex of the elderly-geriatric residence and Day center

Some of the measures proposed in these five buildings also refer to the passage of luminaires to LED technology, as well as the installation of a control and monitoring system, improvements in air conditioning and optimization of the electric bill.

The planned actions for these five buildings represent an investment of 531,933 euros, which would save a total of 86,703 euros, and a reduction of 161 tons of CO2, equivalent to having a wooded area of 8 football fields in the municipality.

Committed to the environment

El Mazarrón is one of 18 town councils committed to the European project ELENA-Fuensanta, an initiative of the European Commission to fight against climate change and to advance in the Europe 20-20-20 strategy.

This strategy, in particular, sets the horizon of achieving a 20 percent savings in energy consumption by 2020, as well as a 20 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and achieving 20 Percent of the energy consumed comes from renewable sources.

The European target for the ELENA-Fuensanta project was to generate investments of more than 15,027,960 euros, which have already been exceeded.

At the moment, more than 19.6 million euros have been mobilized to reduce energy consumption, which will create more than 300 jobs and reduce the electricity bill of the municipalities in the Region by more than two million euros.

At the same time, these investments will avoid the emission of 5,954 tons of CO2 per year, equivalent to more 3,000 vehicles in circulation.
