The IMIDA collaborates with producers of Mazarrón in the improvement of tropical crops to adapt to the characteristics of the region (21/03/2016)

Murciano Research Institute and Agricultural and Food Development (imide), under the Ministry of Water, Agriculture and Environment, working with the City of Mazarrón, the District Agricultural Office of Fuente Álamo-Mazarrón and producers in the region in improving variety of tropical crops such as papaya and mango, in order to adapt to the characteristics of the region.

The Director General of Agrifood Innovation, Juana Mulero, visited this morning, accompanied by the Mayor of Mazarrón, Alicia Jimenez, the estate of Los Molinos Agricultural Development Duran, dedicated to the cultivation of mango and papaya greenhouse with climate control, the La Atalaya, with mesh dragon fruit cultivation, greenhouse Percheles papaya and mango plantation in the Jondón mesh, all in the municipality of Mazarrón.

Juana Mulero explained that "the goal is to subtropical crops as an alternative to traditional crops and strengthen the agricultural sector with the introduction of new varieties that can work well in the region, adapting crops to existing infrastructure and seeking out new products with growing demand in the market. "

These subtropical crops need to be developed between 20 and 30 degrees and not suffer sudden changes in temperature.

Production of papaya and mango is being done successfully in areas of Malaga and Granada.

Duran Agricultural Development Company pioneered the introduction of these crops in the region.

He made his first planting mango and papaya in 2014 as an alternative to growing tomatoes and other vegetables.

Currently it has two hectares of mango papaya five.

IMIDA working on genetic improvement of other fruits such as plum, peach and table grapes in order to make them more resistant to pests and produce new varieties adapted to soil and climate conditions of the region.

The Ministry has organized in Mazarrón on April 7 a technical seminar on 'Introduction of subtropical fruit growing on the coast of Murcia', in collaboration with the Town Council, which will participate as speakers, technicians from the Ministry of the the Palmerillas Experimental station of the University of Almeria, of the Catholic University of Murcia, and companies such as Qualia Group, Capital Genetic EBT SL, among others.
