Mazarrón is emerging as the headquarters of the assembly of the route of the Phoenicians in 2022 (25/02/2020)

The deputy mayor of Historical Heritage, Ginés Campillo, announces that the municipality will aspire to be the capital of the Phoenician world coinciding with the commemoration of the 450th anniversary of the birth of the town

During the celebration in Galera (Granada) of the IV Conference of the Spanish Network of the Route of the Phoenicians, the mayor of Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras, and the first lieutenant, Ginés Campillo, announced the predisposition of the City Council to celebrate the Assembly in Mazarrón National Route of the Phoenicians in 2022, coinciding with the commemoration of the 450th Anniversary of the concession of the Privilege of Villa, exposing the growing importance of the town as a key nucleus in the old Phoenician trade route according to the last treasures found in the Bay bottom.

As a colloquium, Miras and Campillo focused on the discovery of the new Adentro Island site during the last international underwater archeology campaign Mazarrón Fenicio.

The importance of the finding lies in the verification, thanks to the presence of materials from the 8th century BC, that the great maritime and mercantile people of antiquity occupied and frequented the Mazarron coast for at least two hundred years.

That is, with this Mazarrón was positioned as one of the first Phoenician colonizations in the Iberian Peninsula along with Cádiz and Málaga.

However, the mayor and the mayor of Historical Heritage also treated the great commitment to the development of the municipality that involves the recovery of the Mazarrón II wreck and the construction of the museum that will house it.

As this commitment is of key importance for the tourism sector, the Councilor for Tourism, Raquel Raja, was also part of the Mazarronera delegation.

The "Route of the Phoenicians" is one of the international Cultural Itineraries recognized by the Council of Europe.

Considered as the Mediterranean Interculturality Itinerary, it is made up of 18 countries and more than 80 cities of origin and Phenic-Punic culture.

Mazarrón is a founding partner of the route in Spain since, in 2014, the so-called Carta de Jaén was signed.
