Ecoembes and city council commit to improve selective collection in the municipality (16/09/2019)

The company Ecoembes and the City Council of Mazarrón are working together to improve the results on the selective collection of waste in the municipality.

The data referring to 2018 with respect to the previous year show disparate figures regarding the recycling of light containers (yellow container), therefore, although the number of kilograms collected per inhabitant has passed in 2017 from 10.01 to 11.59 in 2018, the percentage of improper in that period also grew more than 10%, specifically from 23.85% in 2017 to 33.95% in 2018.

"A trend that we must tackle because a better selective recycling has an impact not only on an improvement of the Environment, but also on the economic health of the municipal coffers," said the area councilor, Plácida Gómez, who explained that "for the past year the City Council has received 89,518 euros for the collection of light packaging, which would have been greater if all citizens of the municipality contributed our grain of sand. "

In this regard, the City Council plans to purchase new recycling containers because "we know that Mazarrón suffers from a convenient number of containers of this type due to the lack of municipal investment in recent years," said Gomez, who has reiterated the commitment of the Government Team "so that next year we can have more recycling points and more containers in which they already exist."

More positive data shows the evolution of the collection of paper and cardboard (blue container) that has gone from 11.60 kilograms per inhabitant in 2017 to 14,30 in 2018. The economic amount that the municipality has received for this collection is 18,280 euros that, added to those of the collection of light containers and 7,727 euros of the collection of paper and cardboard door to door, have meant an entry to the municipal coffers of 115,525 euros.

The mayor of Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras, has acknowledged that "there are not enough selective collection containers so that the neighbors can recycle in an easy and simple way, something that we will change in the coming months."

The first mayor stressed that "the sustainable commitment of the 2030 Agenda is to combat, among other things, climate change and for that reason selective recycling will play a great role in achieving this important objective in favor of the planet."
