The Region of Murcia will have this summer with the first beaches without smoke in all coastal municipalities, an initiative that for the first time sets in motion the regional government to raise awareness, promote health and protect the environment.

The campaign will be carried out under the motto 'Normal is no smoking' and it is a voluntary initiative to avoid smoking on those beaches marked with badges such as 'Playas sin Humo de la Región de Murcia'.

The first to join this project has been the one in El Rihuete, in Mazarrón, where it is recommended in its entirety not to smoke in the area of the sand from the signaling.

The Minister of Health, Manuel Villegas, and the mayor of the municipality, Alicia Jiménez, visited this area today where they have installed signaling resources that identify it as 'smokeless beach'.

In the coming days the beach of Villananitos, in San Pedro del Pinatar, as well as the municipality of San Javier, with the El Pescador sports beach and El Castillico, both in Santiago de la Ribera, will be integrated into this initiative. Mistral Beach, in La Manga.

Also Los Alcázares joins this initiative with the beach of La Concha, in addition to the municipalities of Cartagena and Águilas.

The Region is one of the first communities to implement this measure.

The Health Minister said that "with this initiative, which in no case has a prohibitive vocation, we want to change one of the most harmful habits for health, such as tobacco, and promote healthy lifestyles in public spaces that bring together many families "

He indicated that "this action is part of the anti-smoking strategy we have been developing to achieve a region free of smoke in 2025".

Manuel Villegas pointed out that "not smoking on the beach will be one more step to achieve a healthier and tobacco-free society and an opportunity to set an example for the little ones".

In the website of Murciasalud and in the QR codes that appear on the identification fences installed in the beach areas and in the more than 20,000 brochures distributed by the Ministry of Health, the beaches that will be part of this initiative this summer are reported.

Also, in this portal 'Beaches without smoke' you can access a questionnaire of satisfaction, assessments and suggestions.

Harmful substances and pollutants

Tobacco is a substance that not only harms the people who consume it and who produces more than 30 diseases, but also those who are exposed to cigarette smoke and the environment in which they are thrown.

On the other hand, cannabis is an illegal drug more used by the young population, which has organic, psychological and social consequences.

It is usually consumed bundled with tobacco, which increases the negative effects of both substances.

The butts are also an important source of pollution of beaches and seas, which require more than 10 years for their degradation.

During this process, the materials and chemical products that compose it are released into the environment and into the water, thus becoming part of the food chain.

Tobacco is a risk factor in the appearance of diseases such as cancer.

It is estimated that this disease will add 7,000 new cases during 2018. In addition, tobacco shortens life expectancy in about ten years and is one of the biggest public health problems.

According to the latest data from the national survey, the Region of Murcia has a downward trend in daily consumption of snuff, five points below 2003, to reach 23.2 percent of the population, and only a small point above the national average which stands at 22 percent.
