The archaeological site of Bahia, a well protected for its cultural relevance (05/10/2009)

The Directorate General of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage of the Autonomous Region of Murcia has initiated the declaration file of well protected for its cultural significance for the archaeological site of the beach of Bahia.

In this paper suggests the need to delimit the affected area, define their values and criteria for protection.

The actions undertaken in the area must be approved by the General Directorate of Fine Arts and Cultural Assets.

Also, the owners of the land affected by the declaration shall keep, preserve and protect the property, ensuring its integrity and preventing its destruction or deterioration.

The site is located in the southern sector of the town of Puerto de Mazarrón, next to the beach Reya.

Today in the archaeological area is located the Hotel Bahia.

Bay Beach is defined as a Roman settlement, known by the discovery, during earthworks associated with the construction of the Hotel Bahia in 1947 and 1948, the remains of a structure of more than two meters standard.

Today, in the archaeological area not seen material remains on the surface, given the information we have about the remains established in the basement during the construction of the hotel, these are not visible and buried under the building.

There is little data for chronological and cultural characterization of the site with other sites such as Punta El Castellar and Nares, belonging to a set of port facilities between I-IV centuries AD, which in turn were dedicated fishing activities and identified as salting factories.

Integrates delineated plot currently occupied by the Hotel Bahia where archaeological remains were recorded at the time of its construction and in the area of beach adjacent to it, remains likely to harbor area in the basement.

The purpose of cataloging the archaeological Bay beach is to protect and preserve archaeological heritage that exists in that area.

In the archaeological area is not allowed the search, collection and removal of archaeological materials and the use of metal detectors or solid waste disposal, unless there is authorization from the Directorate General with responsibility for natural heritage.

Also, the current land use is compatible with the conservation of the site, although any action that involves the removal of land in undisturbed areas or dimensions, and report must have the express permission of the Directorate General with responsibility for cultural heritage.

This information, extracted from the Official Bulletin of the Region of Murcia and published on October 1, 2009, is of great interest to Mazarron and it is the assessment of archaeological, historical and cultural city.
