The Monitoring Committee Phoenician boat lays the foundation for plotting future actions (22/04/2015)

In a meeting that took place at the offices of the Mayor of the City of Mazarrón, the Commission determined Phoenician boat advisory functions, monitoring and setting policy strategies to design and develop all initiatives aimed at research, enhancement and conservation the Phoenician ship "Mazarrón 2" and its archaeological environment.

The committee consists of nine members meeting also established the advisory role to study and propose projects it deems appropriate from a technical point of view.

Said working meeting chaired by the Mayor of Mazarrón, Francisco Garcia, attended the Councilman Heritage, Ginés Campillo, the Head of the Coastal Region of Murcia, Andrés Martínez and Head of Equity History General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, Miguel San Nicolas.

Also attended the scientific directors of the congress on the Phoenician ship held in 2013: José Miguel García, Director of the Museum of the University of Murcia and Juan Blánquez, Professor of Archaeology at the Autonomous University of Madrid.

They completed the meeting Coordinator Nautical and Underwater Archaeology at the University of Cádiz, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Zaragoza, Manuel Martin and the Municipal Archaeologist, María Martínez Mayor.

The Phoenician boat Mazarron is one of the major attractions that the city, regardless of the supply of sun and sand.

A few meters from the beach of the island were found in the mid-90, two Phoenician ships seventh century BC.

One is the oldest shipwreck found in the Mediterranean.

The remains of one of the boats (the Mazarrón 1) were taken to Cartagena where they are exposed at the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology.

The second of the boats (the Mazarron 2) is complete and remains under the waters of the beach of the island.

Mazarrón has been calling in recent years a project that appraise and protect this asset and all that remains and is exposed in the town.
