The CEIP "San Antonio" Cañada de Gallego received yesterday a day conducting ethnographic turn around esparto and its potential as a material for the production of diverse objects.

The activity was attended by Felix Casto, teacher espartero the hamlet of Lewis, who taught the school children of the possibilities offered by this material when working with him.

The day was divided into two sessions in which, besides showing the peculiarities of esparto, historian Juan Francisco Belmar offered the school a talk on how to carry out its preparation and history of use in the municipality of Mazarron.

In its submission made Belmar special emphasis on the middle years of the last century and that at the time this material has a special importance.

The activity was not only theoretical but also practical as it is distributed among the participants esparto themselves elaborasen simple objects such as small twines or ropes.

The conference, attended by all pupils from primary to central sixth grade, was a success because, depending on the level of each course, some aspects worked more than others.

The experience was very enriching for all students.

Many showed real skill in handling the esparto because, as they themselves confessed, had seen their grandparents and even use this material already learned some of the techniques to work with.

The objective of this activity is to this tradition is not lost and that the little ones start in this particular art to keep it alive as part of the history and identity of the town of Mazarron.
