detail of Mazarron

Juan Romera presents the biography of the general Mazarron José Toral (07/12/2017)

He went on to history as the military governor who signed the capitulation of Santiago de Cuba, thus ending centuries of preponderance of the Spanish empire on both sides of the Atlantic.

This role led him to be a misunderstood character and not well treated by the press and society of the time.

But the truth is that, according to those who have studied his figure, the decision of General Toral and Velázquez managed to save many lives of Spaniards who had fought before an empire like the American who arrived in Cuba showing his superiority before another empire that was giving its last throes .

José Toral y Velázquez spent his last years of life suffering mental derangement, dying in 1904 in a psychiatric hospital in Carabanchel.

72 years before it was born in Mazarrón in a house that we still find in the street painter Agustín Navarro.

Son of parents of Ciudad Real and Cartagena, the life of this Mazarron has been told in a biographical approach in which the chronicler of Puerto Lumbreras, Juan Romera, has worked.

The work was presented this week in Consistorial Houses by its author in the company of the parish priest Andrés Marín and the Councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Mazarrón, Pedro Martínez.

Numerous public occupied the banks of the Plenary Hall to listen carefully to the speakers and queue at the end to obtain the signature of someone who for years worked on the development of this book that has donated to the town of Mazarrón.

Those who have an interest in obtaining a copy can go to Town Hall to request it.
