It is an important area for the striped dolphin, common dolphin and the bottlenose dolphin.

It is also of special interest area for loggerhead and has reefs (Escombreras Island, Cope and rocky bottoms out against La Union).

The escarpment is a stunning underwater wall more than 2,600 mde depth, considered part of the set of escarpments arriving continuously from Cabo de Gata to the Balearic Promontory.

This space includes the period between the marine waters south of the island of Fraile (Eagles) to 11,79 km in the direction from Cape Palos (Cartagena).

It reaches a maximum width of 88.16 km and a width of 26.85 km, covering an area of ​​154,080 ha.

Along with the Marine Valleys Escarpment Mazarrón, the Ministry has also declared a Special Area of ​​Conservation (ZEC) the marine area of ​​Cap Martinet, reefs Roquetas de Mar, El Saladillo-Punta de Baños, seabed dela Bay Estepona, funds marine Punta Entinas Sabinar and seabed of Almeria.

The escarpment of Mazarrón was proposed by the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, in compliance with the Habitats Directive, as Site of Community Importance (SCI) because of their wealth.

Once received the approval of the Ministry, the European Commission included it as LIC dela Natura 2000 Network in 2006, and later in the lists of LIC of Mediterranean Marine Region.
